Gapurna International Youth Match RacingChampionships
11
entries were received for the first ever running of this ISAF Grade 3 International
Championship event (already nicknamed 'The Mini Monsoon Cup" for youth sailors
in the age range 16 - 25, with an initial entry of 6 International teams and 5
Malaysian entries from the maximum allowed of 12 boats.
Just
before the start of the Championships, Singapore had to withdraw their entry due
to difficulties with time off college for their sailors which reduced the entry
to 10 teams with entries from Australia (2), New Zealand, Hong Kong, Philippines
making up the International entry and the Malaysian teams from Gapurna Malaysia
(RSYC) (2), Malaysian Yachting Association, Royal Malaysian Navy and Johor Yachting
Association.
The
teams from Australia
and New Zealand showed their
experience in match racing right from the start, finishing the round robin stage
in the top 3 places, with the Philippines
taking 4th place in front of Gapurna Malaysia
1 who finished as top Malaysian boat in 5th place.
The
round robin for the first to fourth ranked places eventually produced a southern
hemisphere top 3 with New Zealand
separating the two Australian teams and the Philippines
in 4th place.
The
event was declared a resounding success by all who participated. The International
umpires provided accurate, effective decision making which gave a lot of credibility
to the event and its future on the Asian youth racing circuit.
