Selangor
Gapurna International Youth One Design Championships
The
first running of this event saw an even split between International competitors
and home grown teams, with 3 teams from Malaysias Team Gapurna Malaysia
competing against international opposition from Singapore,
Philippines and Thailand.
Day
1 of the competition saw a very mixed bag of results from all
6 competitors, with the Philippines
proving most consistent throughout the days racing and coming in as the overnight
leaders, with Malaysias Ng Heng Li and his crew in 2nd place and Thailand
in 3rd.
Day
2 dawned with an unusual brisk breeze, and Malaysias Heng Li knowing
that to win the competition he had to go onto the water and win all 3 races, against
what was proving to be a strong Philippines
national team.
At
the end of the first 2 races of the day, it was all still to be done, Heng Li
had to win the last race to tie the points, but win the championship on the count
back rule.
The
fleet got off to a clean start in the final, championship deciding race, with
Malaysia marginally in front
of the Philippines, at the
windward mark it was still Malaysia
in front and a perfect hoist saw them down the windward leg clean and clear to
win the race, the series and the championships.
