Everything That Floats Regatta

The Royal Selangor Yacht Club’s 2010 sailing season got off to a flying start on the 6th and 7th of March with the “Everything That Floats” regatta, held in the waters around Port Klang. As the name implies, local yachts of all shapes, sizes and ages are encouraged to enter. Billed as a fun event rather than serious competition, it also provides an opportunity for new and inexperienced crew members to encounter the thrill of close quarter yacht racing. Along the way these newbies get the chance to pull ropes, learn a few knots, jump around the deck during manoeuvres and generally be part of a close knit sailing team.

Response this year was excellent, with a wide range of people new to sailing turning up on both days. Some 140 in total registered and efforts were made to provide boat skippers with a good mix of old hands and greenhorns. The wind gods were favourable on Saturday, providing a good blow for during the afternoon and allowing the three classes of yachts to complete two races each with close competition all round. On Sunday the action started rather more slowly, with light breezes at the start, but the wind filled in a little later, requiring more “hanging over the rail” to keep boats upright.

If the talk in the bar afterwards is to be believed, then a great deal of enjoyment was had by all and RSYC will be gaining some new members for regular sailing activities and sailing courses. The evening concluded with class prizes donated by generous sponsors Finnegan’s, Jarrod and Rawlins, Sid’s Pubs and Skyy Vodka. So the lucky winners will be experiencing some good food and beverages in addition to that satisfaction of coming in first.
